The tale of the Ugandan Martyrs is one told time and time again, but each time it is re-told, you can’t help but get freshly astounded at how far these Christians were willing to go to express their beliefs!
The killing of the Ugandan Christians began right here at the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine where four Christians; St. Andrew Kaggwa, St. Denis SSebugwawo, St. Pontiano Ngodwe (at Kyamula) and Mukasa Musa were brutally slayed. After the death of these four martyrs, others were later burnt to death at the very popular, Namugongo Martyrs Shrine.
That is why every 3rd day of June, Ugandans and people from all over the world gather to celebrate the bold and brave Christians who sacrificed their lives for Christianity. Most of the Christians who embark on this holy pilgrimage, in honor of these martyrs have to trek their way to these shrines.
This particular Shrine compared to the Namugongo Shrine has been less publicised but this site having been sanctioned by His Holiness Pope Francis, last year made it known to the world. This magnificent Shrine stands at 45 meters, with a crucifix at 18 metres and can accommodate up to 1050 Christians inside and 500, outside.
This tourist site tops our tourist attractions in the City.
